As well as being a residential area of mainly Victorian terraces, the parish contains shops and restaurants, council and other offices, small businesses, a leisure centre, two primary schools and part of a secondary school.
The population is varied. Many younger people move in and out of the area but many older residents have lived here for some time which helps to provide some stability.
Public transport is generally good with good bus links to many areas and a train service from East Dulwich Station to London Bridge.
